History of Anaheim Hills

Anaheim Hills was initially settled around 9,000 years ago by a group of indigenous people. These people were later called the 'Gabrielinos' due to the location of the San Gabriel Mission, which was built thousands of years later.

The first deeded ownership of the area occurred in 1810. Juan Pablo Peralta and his uncle, Jose Yorba, received the first land grant from the Spanish for what would later be known as Orange County. Together they operated a very successful cattle ranch until the severe droughts and smallpox epidemics of the 1860s caused the sprawling ranches in the area to be partitioned among heirs and creditors.

German families were the next wave of settlers in the area. Their settlement established an extensive wine colony. The wine colony was later replaced with vast groves of orange and avocado trees, as well as oil derricks.

The local economy continued to grow and thrive. After World War II, many service members stationed in the area decided to stay and make Anaheim their home. When Disneyland opened, Anaheim expanded eastward to the border of a large farm owned by the Nohl family. In 1970, Louis Nohl sold his land to the City of Anaheim to create the Anaheim Hills community. Texaco industries commissioned developers to create a 'master planned community' in 1971 and the community of Anaheim Hills was born.
